PROCESS

The forms I create are handbuilt using molds or slabs of clay. For my final body of work I have created forms from molds that are cast in plaster from a master or template. For this project I chose platters and footed bowls, providing surfaces on which to create my surface designs and illustrations.

The process I use to create the surface designs is paper resist. This is a form of stencilling and involves laying newsprint on areas of the design, that I don’t want overlayed with colour.

Once this process is over and when the clay surface is completely dry, I carve into the clay to create marks and texture.

Once the piece has had its final firing, I apply a clear matt lacquer. This accentuates the colours and gives the surface a smooth finish.
